Jake was in the parking lot of Mike’s apartment, just stepping out of Will’s car when he caught sight of Alicia. She was almost at the lobby doors. Jake hurried to catch up to her, slipping ever so slightly on the icy ground.
“Hey, wait up,” he called to her.
“Oh, hey,” Alicia said, waiting for him with the door held open.
“Thanks,” Jake said after he’d passed the door’s threshold.
“Can you believe this whole Stan thing?” Alicia said.
“I don’t really want to talk about it,” Jake said sharply.
“Ok, I get that,” Alicia said. She walked up to a little security box attached to the security doors within the lobby foyer. “Mike gave me the entry code,” she said.
Alicia typed in the code and the door buzzed. Jake grabbed it and held it open for Alicia, who smiled in thanks for his gentlemanly gesture.
“Wait, where’s Will?” Alicia stopped and asked. “Didn’t you come in his car?”
“He, uh, couldn’t make it,” Jake said.
“So he let you borrow his car?” she asked. Jake noticed the skepticism of her tone.
“Looks like,” Jake replied and pushed past her.
“Alright,” Alicia said eyeing him.
Alicia caught up to Jake and the two marched up the stairs.
“Mike said to meet him in the game room,” Alicia announced and opened the door to the second floor main hall exit.
“Weird, why?” Jake said.
“He said that he booked the room for us and that it would be quiet in there,” Alicia said.
They continued through the winding halls. In the close enclosed hallway, Alicia couldn’t help but notice a strong iron smell coming from Jake. The odor was very strong and unpleasant, so she pushed just ahead of him to get out of the odors draft. She had begun to wonder why Will hadn’t let anyone know that he wouldn’t be joining.
“So, what’s wrong with him?” Alicia asked. “Will, I mean.”
“What?” Jake asked with a slight panic touching his vocal cords.
“Why couldn’t he come?” Alicia asked.
“He just couldn’t make it!” Jake said, voice raised. “Alright?”
“Yeah, god!” Alicia said nastily. “Someone’s a little psycho.”
Anger flared within him once more. He grabbed her arm and jerked her towards him.
“You don’t call me that!” Jake said angrily.
Alicia didn’t look him in the eye. She was too focused on his clothes which looked like they were damp with something dark.
“What have you got on you?” Alicia said.
She looked into his eyes and saw madness staring back. She was about to let out a scream, but he covered her mouth and threw her hard against the wall. Alicia threw an elbow which connected hard with Jake’s neck, allowing her a moment to pull away. It was only a moment though, and he was back on her. He grabbed her from behind and pulled her tight to him.
Jake reached for the knife, concealed within the pocket of his hoodie. She struggled fiercely. Jake pushed her against the wall once more, and she turned to face him. He pressed his body close to hers, hoping his weight will keep her struggling to a minimum. He tried to thrust his knife into her chest, but she grabbed his wrist and used all her strength to hold it back. No matter how hard he pushed, he couldn’t stab her. He noticed her focus was on his knife and saw that her neck was exposed. He lunged in and bit her exposed neck.
The surprise of pain caused her grip to loosen and he was able to drive the knife deep into her upper chest. She began to fall, but Jake caught her and eased her to the ground. She had begun to silently cry.
“I didn’t want to kill you,” Jake assured her with a whisper in her ear. “I actually like you, all things considered. But you asked too many questions. You brought this on yourself.”
She gasped for breath. He caressed her cheek briefly.
“Don’t worry,” he said. “The pain will pass soon.”
He wiped his knife on the front of her shirt. He got up and continued down the hall until he found a sign that marked the game room. Jake gripped the knob and opened the door.
“Jake, hey,” Mike said from a sofa. He was typing on his laptop and barely paid Jake attention. “You’re the first one.”
When Mike finally looked up from his laptop, he saw a Jake that was covered in blood and twitching oddly.
“JAKE!” Mike yelled in astonishment, as he rose to his feet. “Jesus, are you alright? You’re bleeding!”
“Oh, it’s not mine,” Jake said offhandedly.
“Why are you holding a knife?” Mike asked upon seeing the gleam of the ceiling light hitting the blade.
“I just killed four people,” Jake confessed.
“What?” Mike exclaimed.
“Oh, no!” Jake said slightly laughing. “I don’t want you to get the wrong idea. They deserved it.”
Angela appeared at Jake’s side. She rubbed his shoulders soothingly.
“Except you, of course,” Jake said to her.
Mike backed away from Jake and raised his laptop in the air threateningly.
“What the hell did you do, freak?!” Mike asked angrily.
Suddenly, though Mike couldn’t see it, Jake was surrounded by not only Angela, but Stan, Will, Sarah, and Alicia as well.
“Why’d you go and tell him for?” Will asked in a whiny voice. “Now you have to kill him too.”
“I realize that Will!” Jake said.
“Jake!” Stan shouted. “Stop! This is getting sick.”
“Do you enjoy killing people?” Alicia asked.
“That’s what it looks like,” Sarah said.
“Of course I don’t like it!” Jake yelled back.
“I think you do,” Stan said.
“Stan, shut up!” Jake said through gritted teeth. “I don’t want to hear it.”
“Kill him for me,” Angela begged sweetly into Jake’s ear. “Remember how he put you down on Monday? Come on! Please. For me?”
“I’d do anything for you,” Jake said, caressing her cheek.
“Oh, now you are all over him?” Stan asked. “See Jake, I told you she’s a whore.”
“You don’t call her that!” Jake yelled to Stan.
This was too much for Mike to take in. From what he could see, Jake was talking to people who weren’t in the room.
“You are completely bat-shit crazy!” Mike yelled.
“Just do it Jake,” Alicia said.
“Make it quick,” Will said.
“Stop encouraging him,” Stan pleaded. “This has gone too far.”
“Just take it one step further,” Sarah said. “It can all be over.”
“Kill him!” Angela said. “God, you are so sexy when you do it. Just kill him. You can get away with it. Forget what Stan says.”
“You hear that?!” Jake asked Stan. “I can get away with it.”
“You are gonna get caught!” Mike shouted. “What the fuck is wrong with you?”
A cacophony of “Do it! Do it, Jake” erupted from Angela, Sarah, Alicia, and Will.
“Yeah, this isn’t gonna end well,” Stan said.
“Stan, would you shut the fuck up?!” Jake bellowed. “Mike, you’re fuckin’ dead!”
Jake rushed Mike, who backed away with speed. Jake swiped the blade at Mike slicing his arm.
“That’s it, man,” Will said encouragingly.
“Oh, I love you!” Angela purred.
Mike pushed Jake back with his healthy arm and reached for the knife. Jake’s hold is too tight. Mike couldn’t pry Jake’s grip. Jake grabbed Mike’s throat and squeezed with all his might. The moment Mike reached for his agonized throat, Jake plunged the knife deep into Mike’s side. Mike fell to the floor with a scream. Jake straddled Mike, raising the knife high above him.
“That’s it,” Angela said seductively.
It happed fast. Jake felt someone grab his hands from behind and pressed on them with all their weight, forcing the knife deep into Jake’s own gut. Jake was winded, and turned to see a very faint looking and blood soaked Alicia. Jake clutched his gut, and pulled the knife out. The sight of his own blood nauseated him.
“God, that hurts!” Jake moaned. “Ugh. Oh, god.”
Jake looked to Alicia, who was cradling Mike. “God, I’m so sorry.”
“You’re sorry!?!” Mike shouted clutching his side.
“I didn’t know,” Jake said, unable to endure the pain that ricocheted through his whole being. “AHHHHHHH! God. Shit. I think I’m gonna die.”
Jake writhed on the ground, and he could feel the blood pulsate out of his gaping wound. He struggled for air. The knife appeared to puncture a lung as well. He was regurgitating blood.
“Oh, god,” Jake said weakly. “I’m so sorry.”
Jake was looking to the two people bleeding before him, and the visions of his victims. He weakly got to his knees, and crawled to the sofa Mike had been sitting on. He tried to sit up, but was too pained to do so. So he lay back on it.
“I don’t want to die,” Jake whined. “I don’t want to die. I’m only 17! I don’t want to die. Please!”
“Fuck you!” Alicia screamed.
“I don’t want to die,” Jake said growing ever more faint. “I don’t—” Then, she appeared and was all he could see as the light seemed to fade.
He lay with his back against the couch, all feeling lost at the sight of the Valkyrie before him. Angela, the woman of his rich desire and greatest inspiration, knelt beside him at the couch allowing him to gaze into her profoundly green eyes. As all other feeling seemed to ebb away, Jake felt deep love and incredible happiness as she brushed his hair back and planted a gentle kiss on his lips; a kiss that would last forever….
